FIC Project Awarded to DOMOLIF

Project Presentation

We are pleased to share our new FIC project, “Development of a Next-Generation Biotechnological Product for Tailings Reuse,” an initiative promoted and prioritized by the Regional Government of Antofagasta through the Innovation for Competitiveness Fund FIC-R 2023, Code BIP 40057514-0. This project aims to support social innovation, education, and knowledge in the Antofagasta region by developing a next-generation biotechnological product for the biological cementation of tailings.

With confirmed funding through Exempt Resolution No. 607/2024, DOMOLIF SPA is committed to leading this project with a focus on innovation and sustainability. The subsidy amounts to $285,540,000, covering a significant portion of the project’s costs and underscoring the trust and support of the Regional Government of Antofagasta in our proposal. This funding highlights the importance of our initiative in both regional and national contexts, positioning us as a key player in technological innovation and environmental sustainability.

We are prepared to face the challenges this project entails and anticipate successful outcomes that will exceed the expectations of our funders and beneficiaries. With the support of the Regional Government of Antofagasta, we are ready to take a significant step toward more advanced and sustainable biotechnology.

The origin of this project lies in the search for sustainable solutions for mining development and the circular economy. We focus on the large volumes of tailings generated in mining operations, which are usually deposited in tailings dams, with a well-known negative impact on the environment. Considering the enormous amounts produced, it is reasonable to explore new uses for tailings, such as in the manufacture of construction materials.

On the other hand, the cement industry is one of the most polluting worldwide, contributing between 4% and 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions. This has led many countries to invest in the search for less polluting processes. At Domolif, we have been focused on finding green alternatives to address these issues. Through the use of biocementing bacteria, we have developed a first generation of biological cement using 100% tailings, with no gas emissions during its production. These results are promising for giving tailings a new life; however, we still face the challenge of finding more efficient microorganisms for biocementation, enabling us to develop a broader range of construction materials.

Within the framework of the FIC-R Antofagasta project awarded to DOMOLIF SPA, we hereby present the essential documentation that supports our management and commitment to excellence and transparency in the execution of high-impact technological and environmental initiatives. These documents are fundamental to demonstrating the solid financial backing and detailed planning that characterize our project.
