Domolif launches regional call for volunteers in innovative research on intestinal microbiota

The study aims to establish a baseline of the intestinal microbiome in the Antofagasta Region and analyze its relationship with exposure to environmental contaminants such as arsenic and lead.

The Domolif SpA Research and Development Center has opened a call to recruit volunteers who wish to participate in a groundbreaking study on the intestinal microbiota of the population in the Antofagasta Region. This initiative is part of the project “Construction of the Regional Human Microbiome of Antofagasta” (Code BIP 40067563-0), funded by the Regional Fund for Productivity and Development of the Regional Government of Antofagasta.

The objective is to generate local scientific evidence on how environmental exposure to contaminants such as arsenic and lead may be influencing the intestinal health of the region’s inhabitants. Through the analysis of biological samples and personal data, the study will characterize the composition and diversity of the intestinal microbiome in healthy adults residing in six communes with different levels of environmental exposure: Antofagasta, Calama, Tocopilla, Mejillones, Taltal, and Sierra Gorda.

Having a regional baseline on the composition of the intestinal microbiota is a key first step. This information will allow progress toward deeper research, such as longitudinal observational cohort studies that explore possible links between intestinal dysbiosis and chronic diseases in contexts of environmental exposure. “This initial stage is essential to lay the foundations for more precise and contextualized health surveillance,” said Sophia Garrido, Data Manager of the project.

Who can participate?

  • Healthy individuals between 20 and 50 years old (without chronic diseases or complex treatments).
  • Healthy individuals with a normal weight or overweight, with a BMI between 18.5 and 29.9.
  • Residents who have lived for at least 5 years in one of the six participating communes.

Participation includes:

  • Free examinations: blood pressure, weight, height, glucose levels, cholesterol, and body mass index (BMI).
  • Personalized questionnaire: on health and lifestyle.
  • Standardized kit: for fecal sample collection, with ensured traceability.
  • Random subsample: free hair analysis to detect heavy metals and essential nutrients (estimated commercial value: $240,000 CLP).
  • Individual results delivery: confidential and with professional interpretation, sent by email at the end of the study.
  • Group results delivery: confidential, since no personal participant information is shown; results are presented by geographic areas in comparison with the region.
